You Just Might be an Ohio’an…

Well, it’s happened again.  We’ve survived another winter.  I have to admit that I really don’t mind these “warming” trends that have created these milder winter seasons – though I do feel for my snow removal friends out there.

There have been several occasions of late that take me back to comedian Jeff Foxworthy’s famous “You know you’re a redneck” statements.  (One I recently heard is – “If you come home from the garbage dump with more than you went with……you might be a redneck”…ha ha!)  But for us here in the Heartland, it’s been more like – if it’s freezing one week, summer the next, then freezing again….you just might live in Ohio.  Or, here’s one I’ve never seen before….when your customer’s pet lamb rummages through and chews on your bag like a goat…you just might live in Ohio.

No matter how many times I may think – “why don’t we just move somewhere warmer?”, I always come back to the fact that, this is home.  My oldest son, Josh, just moved out to Scottsdale, AZ with his wife, and he continues to sing […]

Merry Thank-istmas!

My, oh my, how time sure flies by!  It’s hard to believe that an entire summer painting season has come and gone since we sent out our last newsletter.  And, since we are so close to the holiday season, I thought I would send a combined, November/December edition.  And, I hope I can make up for lost time…

This season has not only been busy, but challenging as well because, as some of you know, we started our other company, Black Diamond Details, last year.  And if you know anything about me, you know that I’m a pretty transparent guy.  So if someone asks how business is going, I’m going to tell the truth – good or bad.  So, I thought I would share how things are going – starting with thanks-giving.

I am so grateful for the ability to move into our new location at the end of last/beginning of this year.  It accommodates both companies very well, and we are actually considering purchasing the property in the very near future.  There is even plenty of space for expansion if we would ever have the […]

A Time to Relax and Reflect

Every winter comes with it’s own sense of uncertainty in regards to our work load.  Typically, things tend to slow down a bit – even interior work.  And I find myself torn between a little financial anxiety and a sense of hopeful anticipation as I look forward to a time of decreased stress and work load.  So, as much as I do not care for cold weather, I have to admit that I appreciate a slower-paced work schedule – as long we have enough work to keep everyone out of the unemployment line.

As I sit here writing, listening to my Pandora “Cool Jazz” station, I find that it is also easier for me to relax and think.  Yes, there is still plenty of work to be done, but it sure is nice only having to work 8 hours a day – as opposed to the summer’s 10-12 hour days.  And I know I’ve said it before, but as I reflect on the previous season, I am again grateful for our incredible group of customers and associates.  We haven’t had to advertise for new customers […]
